Chapter nine, not 62% of the way in.

A location you can act on is a chapter number. Before anything is extracted, the scan works out how your book divides and where the story starts and stops, and every report after it inherits the answer, from the first-appearance index to the fix list.

How it works

Read once, and used by every report.

1

Three text patterns, tried in order

A chapter word and a number, a bare numeral on a line of its own, or a Roman numeral. The first pattern that produces a plausible set of marks wins, and marks closer together than three hundred words are thrown out - which is what removes a table of contents, whose entries sit a few lines apart while real chapters are thousands of words apart.

2

The file's own structure, where it carries any

A heading style is never trusted for being a heading style: that says the line is a heading, not that it is a chapter. It earns its place either by reading like a chapter once, after which the rest of that style joins it, or by opening its own file in the EPUB, which is what a chapter is in that format. Neither route lets a scene break through.

3

Front and back matter left out

On by default. The story is bracketed between the last piece of front-matter furniture, a copyright line or an also-by list, and the first back-matter heading. It refuses to trim at all if that would discard more than sixty per cent of the book.

4

And where it cannot be sure, it says so

Every result carries how it was decided and whether it is confident. Where it is not, every screen falls back to percentages and tells you why, because a wrong chapter number in a fix list is worse than no chapter number at all.

Use cases

What it changes, further down the line.

Any manuscript

A fix list that says chapter nine rather than 62%, so you know which file to open.

Self-published

An also-by list kept out of the scan, so your own series titles are not read as invented terms.

Titled chapters

An EPUB whose chapters are named rather than numbered, read from the files themselves.

Your own divisions

A book that divides into Cycles or Fragments, using the word you actually use.

FAQ

Questions about structure detection.

My book never uses the word chapter. Will it still work?

Often, since a bare numeral or a Roman numeral on a line of its own is recognised too, and an EPUB can be read from its own files. If your book divides itself some other way, tick “I use my own chapter word” in the sidebar and type it. Your word is used ahead of every built-in rule.

What if it gets the chapters wrong?

It is built to say so rather than to guess. Where the scan is not confident, the reports print percentages instead and tell you that is what they are doing. Nothing here prints a chapter number it cannot stand behind.

Why leave the front and back matter out?

Because a title page and an also-by list are in your file but not in your story. Counted, they put your own series titles in the glossary and pin a term to page one. Turn the toggle off and the whole file is counted, if you would rather.

Could it trim something it should not?

Two things stop it. Front and back matter words are only matched on short lines of their own rather than anywhere in the prose, so “it was also by no means unprecedented” stays a sentence. And if trimming would cost more than sixty per cent of the book, nothing is trimmed at all.
