Feature · Stage 2, Map the book

Tune the engine to how you actually write.

Toggle bold and italic search, single-quoted phrases, terms containing numbers, hyphenated words, or the words that open a sentence. Set a word-length range, and add up to three include and three exclude patterns. Re-tuning and running it again is free on the preview.

How it works

Every toggle is additive, and runs in the same scan.

1

Turn on the patterns that fit your book

Bold or italicised terms, ‘single-quoted’ phrases, hyphenated words, or anything containing digits.

2

Set a minimum and maximum word length

Rule out short common words or long descriptive phrases with one range.

3

Add your own include and exclude patterns

Up to three of each. Sweep in a recurring prefix or character, and silence anything you already know is not a term.

4

Sentence-start words, if you need them

Off by default. The first word of a sentence is capitalised whether or not it is a name, so it is normally skipped. Turn this on and names that only ever appear at the start of a sentence are found too, at the cost of some ordinary words slipping through. Expect to strike a few off by hand.

Use cases

Small adjustments, tuned to your manuscript.

Fantasy

Include “-thorn” to catch every place name sharing that suffix.

Sci-fi

Toggle “Contains Numbers” to catch designations like “RX-9.”

Dialogue-heavy prose

Toggle “Single Quotations” to catch terms your characters coin in dialogue.

Any genre

Exclude a recurring false positive, such as a nickname that reads as a common word.

FAQ

Questions about the detection controls.

Why is Bold & Italicised greyed out sometimes?

.rtf and .txt carry no formatting once the text is extracted, so that pattern has nothing to search. It is disabled with an explanation rather than silently doing nothing.

Can I combine multiple patterns at once?

Yes. Every toggle and include/exclude field is additive and runs in the same scan.

What happens to terms outside my word-length range?

They are left out of that scan's results entirely. Adjust the range and re-scan to bring them back.

Does re-tuning and running it again cost anything?

On the free preview, no. Re-scanning is free, up to twenty scans an hour, so the controls are worth playing with before you buy anything. Once you are on a pass, each run is a fresh reading of the file and comes off your scan allowance, so it pays to change several settings at once rather than one at a time.

Do these settings carry over between manuscripts?

They stay set while the tool is open, so a re-scan or a new file keeps your last configuration. Switching to a format that cannot support a pattern disables it automatically.
