Feature · Stage 4, Use the book

One manuscript in. A checked story world and the documents four people need, out.

The rest of the catalogue answers what is in the book and what is wrong with it. This answers the one that comes after, which is what to do with them: four documents, each named for the person who receives it, every one built from the same single scan.

How it works

Organised by who receives it.

1

For your editor

The fiction style sheet: canonical spellings, aliases, appearances and the spelling, capitalisation and hyphenation the book already keeps.

2

For your next book

The series bible: every report from this scan bound into one document, so book two starts from what book one settled.

3

For your narrator

The pronunciation guide, split into syllables for you to correct. It is the sheet ACX and Audible productions ask authors for.

4

For your readers

The reader glossary, as a back-of-book appendix, an EPUB companion or a page for your site - and cut at a point in the book, so an edition for early readers gives nothing away.

Use cases

When to open it.

Before submission

The last screen before the manuscript leaves your hands.

Self-publishing

Everything the upload, the narrator and the back of the book need, in one pass.

Series

Closing out book three and setting up book four at the same time.

Editors

What to send back to a client alongside the marked-up file.

FAQ

Questions about the pack.

Is it a single download?

No, and deliberately. Four different people want four different documents in four different formats, and a zip nobody opens is worse than four buttons. The pack is the screen that names them and takes you to each one.

Does it cost four scans?

No. Every document in it is built from the one scan you already ran.

What if my book is not part of a series?

The series bible is still the reference you will want if you ever write in the same world again, and the other three are about this book.
