Is 61 inconsistent spellings a lot?

Every other report tells you what is in your manuscript. This one tells you whether it is unusual. Your figures are placed against published novels scanned with the same tool on the same settings, so a count you have no way of interpreting becomes a position you can act on.

How it works

Measured the same way, on both sides.

1

The comparison corpus is public domain books

Thousands of published books, scanned end to end with the same engine that scans yours, on its default settings. Nothing about the comparison is a rule of thumb or an industry average somebody asserted.

2

Your figures are placed as percentiles

The comparison runs on the rate per 10,000 words rather than the raw count, because a long manuscript carries more of everything and is no worse written for it. The raw figure sits beside the placement as the thing to go and fix.

3

Nothing about your manuscript is kept

The placement is worked out during the scan and returned with the report. Your file is never stored, which is also why the corpus is public domain books rather than other people's drafts.

Use cases

What it settles.

First novel

Whether 61 inconsistent spellings is a disaster or an ordinary Tuesday.

Epic fantasy

Whether your invented vocabulary is genuinely dense or only feels it.

Series

Whether book three drifted further than book one did.

Editors

A defensible figure to put in front of a client who believes their draft is clean.

FAQ

Questions about the comparison.

What is it comparing against?

Published books from Project Gutenberg, scanned cover to cover with this same tool. The corpus, the per-book measurements and the workings are published in full, and the dataset grows over time.

Does being average mean my manuscript is fine?

No, and that is the useful part. Every book in the comparison was finished, professionally edited and printed, and 99.8 per cent of them still spell at least one of their own terms more than one way. The middle of that range is the level a professional edit left behind, not a clean bill of health.

Is it on the free scan?

Yes. It is built from the counts a free scan already reports, so you see where you sit before deciding whether to unlock the terms themselves.
